Vulnerable - Impact on Life and Profession

With respect to life and profession, there are people who plan things well in advance. There are few who takes what life throws at them. I fall into the later. Being vulnerable is also one of the reasons for this. Looking back, there are three defining instances that I would say that changed my professional life and is having a great impact.

1990 - From Higher secondary to Graduation

Scored 74% in HSC exams - 152 in Economics, 151 in Commerce and 140 in Accountancy with Maths (101) it was 68%, was never big in studies, but with this marks am quite sure would have got into a degree program in a decent college at Chennai. But parents decided to send me to Mumbai for higher studies. Went with the flow. It was a different world. My sister was sent to Salem for her graduation and was staying in the hostel. (There are exceptions where its sent earlier too) but in my case, I was sent to my maternal grandparent' place. I was just packed and dispatched. For me, it was a different world, culturally and otherwise. My experience with Mumbai is documented here. Learnt a lot during my 14 years at Mumbai.

2004 - from the US to India

After doing decently well in product consulting could have continued in the United States in 2004 and continued until now. But strange things do happen, overnight decided to return to India to be with my ailing grandfather and didn’t return to meet uncle sam for long term work. Started doing project management for domestic projects. My shift from the US was also not a planned one. Decided one day, onto action the next day. Again went with the flow. This was a decision that I took. Have no regrets whatsoever. One of the best decisions.

2009 Venture into entrepreneurship

Decided to venture into entrepreneurship during 2009. Not that I inherited business acumen from my parents. Venturing into entrepreneurship has never stuck me till then. But along with few friends decided to start our own product consulting firm. Again didn’t plan, went with the flow. Being an entrepreneur was not my life goal. Our Product consulting idea failed miserably, changed the focus to mobile application design/development firm. Here we are into the 9th year, fully bootstrapped.

Being vulnerable has always helped me to date. The above three are some major instances wherein I have gone with the flow. Being vulnerable also means you are open to taking risks. As they say 'Risk pays dividends, idle talk brings only wants'. Cheers.
